Bio: Amazing Grace, gentle and affectionate, a girl whose calm nature will endear her to all who meet her, is a rare combo of all the right stuff that most of us want in a family dog. Although calm she is no slouch, she likes to play, go for walks, is happy to learn new things, and is very content to be left alone to chew her stuffed hedgehog and other toys.
Her story is a sad one in that her owner must send her on her way to a new home as he himself is setting up his next home at a senior's facility, and Grace does not come under the permissible small dog requirement to be able to join him.
I was told that Grace has two points of resistance: she has poor recall and she won't hold a stay command. Yet as I worked with her, within five minutes she held her stay (no distractions I'll grant you that but she held it well) and with the leash, also in a very short time, she came with me without need of correction. 'Downs' took a little longer to master but again shortly into the routine she would lie down for me from ten feet away. Grace wants to cooperate.
She was introduced to the Last Chance gang of four dogs, fitting in as though they were family. Grace shared her toys very well and showed no concern even when Hope took it upon herself to not only take one of her toys, but to give herself an inside tour of the house.
Grace is a picture of health now and has been all her life; I however recommend that she lose about 5-10 pounds to keep her thriving.
Other good stuff: great with children, strangers, traffic (motorcycles, bicycles, trucks...etc.) and rides well in the car. When she has been free to roam she stays within a few houses on either side and comes back happily. One little habit that would be good to stop is her chewing of rocks, but that is an easy fix. Another curiosity is her winter activity of making snowballs. Get her started with one small one and she starts to roll it into a big ball. Grace hasn't yet made a snowman or dog, but given her enthusiasm I'm confident that that is just around the corner.
Grace's owner would love to see her go to an active family with or without children or dogs, and it would warm his and our hearts for Grace's new people to occasionally take her to the senior's home in Sidney and visit him.
